'X Factor' Judges Home Visit Episode Bumped Due To Baseball
Rain delay in ALCS game forces schedule change for Wednesday's and Thursday's shows.

Simon Cowell's "X Factor" has survived more modest ratings than the brash British judge promised for his reality singing show. And given his tenacity and the amount of money piled up to promote the American version of his hit British competition show — not to mention the $5 million prize — it seems like it would take an act of God to knock the "Factor" train off the track.
Well, that's exactly what happened on Wednesday night when the show's final 32 were slated to visit the judges' homes and commune with such special mentors as Rihanna.
The American League Championship Series game between the Detroit Tigers and the Texas Rangers was originally slated to begin at 4:19 p.m., but the pounding rain didn't let up until after 5:30. By the time the grounds crew began prepping the field, the game had been delayed by two hours and 13 minutes. That already put the 8 p.m. start time for "Factor" into jeopardy. But add in the fact that the game went into extra innings after ending in a 3-3 tie after nine and you had a serious scheduling headache for Fox.
By the fifth inning, it was announced that "Factor" would not air on Wednesday night, but would return to its regular slot on Thursday (October 13). The current plan calls for last night's episode to air on Thursday and Thursday's show to air on Sunday. That's all fine and good (assuming this afternoon's game is not delayed by rain as well), but if a game seven is forced between the two teams, "Factor" may have to shuffle again, meaning Fox might have to air three episodes of the show in the same week to keep things on track.
As if all of this shuffling wasn't confusing enough (and way frustrating for "Factor" fanatics), the third round of the judges' home visits will air on Tuesday, which is another switch from the Wednesday-Thursday schedule.
To refresh your memory, after the grueling "X Factor" boot camp shows, L.A. Reid is mentoring the boys (Brennin Hunt, Brian Bradley, Chris Rene, etc.), Simon Cowell has the girls (Rachel Crow, Tiah Tolliver, Drew Ryniewicz, etc.), Nicole Scherzinger will deal with the over-30s (Dexter Haygood, Josh Krajcik, LeRoy Bell, etc.) and Paula Abdul is corralling the groups (2squar'd, the Brewer Boys, the Stereo Hogzz). After visiting the judge's homes (or a neutral location of their choice), the 16 semifinalists will vie for a spot in the upcoming live shows.

Beyonce's 'Countdown' Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet
We analyze the Mod references and more as B does her best 'Funny Face' in new Technicolor clip.
By Rebecca Thomas
Beyonce in the "Countdown" video
Photo: Columbia
Beatniks, bobby socks and ... Beyoncé? On Thursday night, King B premiered her eagerly anticipated, Adria Petty-directed "Countdown" video, doing a bit of time travel back to the Swinging Sixties.
The colorful clip (if you doubt it, check out the glorious "Countdown" GIF Wall our pals at Buzzworthy cooked up!) is packed with references and looks — spanning the '60s to the '80s, from vintage Vogue covers to a head-to-toe homage to the Hollywood musical "Funny Face."
Check out what we spotted, and let us know what we missed!
The Banana Dance: Josephine Baker was just too hot for these United States, so she took her provocative act to the one place where a black girl in the 1920s could get down without the prude police knocking down your door: Paris. While B isn't topless with a fistful of ripe Chiquita bananas strung around her waist, she does La Baker proud in a series of twirls and booty-popping twists.
"Blow-Up": Influential Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni captured London's Mod scene in this 1966 flick. "Countdown" not only recalls the film's Technicolor glow and quick-cut technique, but B's exaggerated high-fashion poses also feel inspired by the ones depicted in the motion picture.
"Fame": Ragtag bunch of gifteds dance on tables at a New York City performing arts high school in early-80s TV series. Their leader (played by Debbie Allen) kicked off each episode with a pep talk about the high price of fame, but it's the studio and the modern dance duds that come to mind when we watch Petty's 2011 clip.
"Flashdance": Pittsburgh welder/exotic dancer has her heart set on getting into a prestigious ballet company in the 1983 cult classic. King B tugs at the shoulder of her gray sweatshirt, and pop culture welcomes another Jennifer Beals homage into the universe.
"Funny Face": A gamine Audrey Hepburn dons beatnik black in the West Village in this 1957 Fred Astaire musical. From the bunched white socks and loafers to the fancy footwork, Beyoncé kicks off "Countdown" by nailing the silver-screen queen's iconic look — and dusts off the Bebop moves too!
Check out the photos! Pop Culture References In Beyonce's 'Countdown'
The Gap: Americans presumably bought khakis in record numbers in 1998, the same year the retailer launched an ad campaign featuring swing dancers in their pleated pants. The commercial comes rushing back when B's suddenly surrounded by khaki-clad hoofers.
"Glass Pieces": Set to a Phillip Glass composition, Broadway giant Jerome Robbins created the work for the New York City Ballet. Could B's team have been checking out the piece when they picked out those colorful costumes and choreographed the airy footwork?
"I Wanna Dance With Somebody": Flashing fluorescent backdrops with monochromatic DayGlo outfit changes to match. The black-and-white tiled floor, Crayola-box makeup, even an assortment of wide-band hair bows — it's all there in Brian Grant's 1987 clip for Whitney Houston, and now it's in B's extravaganza.
Luna, Donyale: In March 1966, Detroit native became first black model to cover British Vogue, striking the eye-between-the-fingers pose for famed photog David Bailey. Beyonce, looking very Luna, shows off similar handwork.
Mondrian, Piet: Early-20th century Dutch artist's primary color-drenched, colorblock pieces were hallmark of his Neo-Plasticism style. The grid-like backgrounds in Beyoncé's visual look like they could have been painted by Piet.
Quant, Mary: Fashion/cosmetics designer reigned in the swinging '60s. Superstar's hair and makeup job looks exactly like a popular ad for the brand.
The Supremes: Motown girl group; legends. No one does Diana like the "Dreamgirl," who shakes it in a sparkly silver minidress and bouffant wig.
"Valley of the Dolls": Campy 1967 film based on novel by Jacqueline Susann about three 20-somethings with Big Apple dreams who succumb to drugs (dolls) and drama. B's pink nightdress with purple hair bow look reminds us of the movie's promotional poster.
Versace: Look no further than vintage Versace ads for clues about the juicy, rainbow-bright bodysuits that B pairs with a striped, wide-brim chapeau.
"West Side Story": Jets and Sharks knew the only way to settle a turf war was ... a dance-off! Dance master Jerome Robbins worked up a snaps-heavy number for the theatrical release. And B snaps to that.

Dimmu Borgir Release Live DVD; Plus Led Zeppelin, Brujeria, & More News That Rules, In Metal File
'It shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums,' guitarist says.

On October 14, Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.
"It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told Metal File last week, after dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."
Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with Moonspell, Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.
"It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f--_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f--- is this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."
Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled In Sorte Diaboli. "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.
"I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."
While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.
"And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."
Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.
"We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."
The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.
The rest of the week's metal news:
Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, Winds of Plague, have announced ex-Azusa drummer Art Cruz has joined their ranks — he replaced Jeff Tenney. According to the band's blog, "Art has already added a new spark to the band and has provided us with a solid backbone that will allow us to continue our rampage stronger than ever." ...
What the world really needs is another Led Zeppelin box set, so, on November 4, Rhino Records will issue the Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica CD box set. For just $200, you'll get 1969's Led Zeppelin, 1969's Led Zeppelin II, 1970's Led Zeppelin III, 1971's Led Zeppelin IV, 1973's Houses of the Holy, 1975's Physical Graffiti, 1976's Presence, 1976's The Song Remains the Same, 1979's In Through the Out Door and 1982's Coda, as mini-LP replicas, with artwork from the original U.K. LP sleeves. Now, you know what you can get your dad for Christmas. ...
Former Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach and current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz have teamed up for a new project they're calling Times of Grace, and they've already started working on material for their debut album. According to Leach, "We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic — we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. This album went from a melodic metal album to an epic mix of metal/rock/pop/shoegaze and punk. So all of your metal expectations will be incorrect — we are pushing genre boundaries." To quote "Meet the Parents," we'll look forward to that, Greg. ...
The Funeral Pyre and Early Graves will be hitting the road together next month, starting November 7 in South Lake Tahoe, California. Dates are booked through November 21 in Hollywood. ...
The latest incarnation of Brujeria, which features Carcass frontman Jeff Walker and Napalm Death's Shane Embury, have lined up several U.S. dates for this winter. The band will begin its brief trek November 28 in Denver, and wrap things up in Dallas on December 7. ... Demiricous will be touring with the Gates of Slumber starting November 9 in Denver, for a jaunt that's scheduled to run through December 6 in Indianapolis. ...
Nearly three years after Roadrunner Records' Roadrunner United concert, which took over the Nokia Theater in New York's Times Square, the label is now releasing footage from that special night as "Roadrunner United: The Concert." The DVD, which hits stores December 9, will boast two discs and 24 live tracks, including Life of Agony's "River Runs Red," King Diamond's "Abigail," Killswitch's "My Last Serenade," Type O Negative's "Black No. 1" and Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist." ...
According to Blabbermouth, Verrot, bassist for Swedish black-metal outfit Elimi, committed suicide on October 3. In a statement, the band said, "Verrot was a very good friend, brother, an excellent bass player/musician and an important part of Elimi; we respect his decision and hope he'll find his way with the dark gods of Chaos. Let your black flame be a part of what brings forth the day of wrath."

'Avengers' Trailer: Experts Weigh In
We asked movie and comic book experts to analyze first official trailer.
By Josh Wigler
Samuel L. Jackson in "The Avengers"

The first trailer for "The Avengers" is finally here, offering our best look yet at what director Joss Whedon has in mind for when Earth's Mightiest Heroes gather together on the big screen in May.
For many fans, the trailer delivered on all its promises: extensive looks at the team in action, creepy narration from Tom Hiddleston's Loki and even Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury stepping onto the battlefield with a bazooka in tow. For other fans — let's just say the sweet melodic stylings of Nine Inch Nails wasn't exactly what they had in mind for the trailer's soundtrack, among other grievances.
To get a better sense at what fans are thinking regarding the "Avengers" trailer, MTV News reached out to film and comic book experts across the blogosphere to weigh in with their thoughts on the latest Marvel teaser. The overall verdict, with few exceptions, is that the trailer is a rollicking success.
"I'm a guy who likes to deal in specifics, and what I can say specifically is I honestly liked all of it," said Jonah Weiland, executive producer at Comic Book Resources. "Sets an incredible tone and gives us a glimpse of the dynamic between the core members (I'm sure we'll find out more about Black Widow and Hawkeye in due time). The action looks intense, but most importantly the characters all look like they 'fit' together — frankly, that's one of the biggest challenges with this 'team movie' concept Marvel has been building to and it appears on first glance like they've succeeded in a major way."
NextMovie's Kevin Polowy agreed that the "Avengers" trailer was the home run he was hoping for. "First off, I'm just relieved there's some meat to it," he said. "This is leaps and bounds beyond the unrevealing teaser trailer I think a lot of fans feared. Instead, we're treated to glimpses of all the Avengers as well as Nick Fury and Loki, not to mention plenty of other bells and whistles: Menacing narration, cars blowing up, rocket launchers, trademark Tony Stark snark, more cars blowing up ... lots of cars blow up in this trailer. Plus a look at that 'rage monster' the Hulk! I thought it rocked. This is really going to bring the house down at New York Comic Con."
From the perspective of HitFix's Gregory Ellwood, Marvel hit the nail on the ol' Shellhead when it comes to the movie's big selling point. "It was fantastic to see Iron Man flying through the air again — Marvel knows how they are going to open this movie, and it's with him," he said. "The Downey Jr./Banner moment was cute (boy are those guys short, though), Hemsworth's charm is always infectious, Sam Jackson is kickin' ass like there are some snakes everywhere, Black Widow is in the house, we get our first glimpse of an Avengers Quinjet and a shot of Cap and Thor coming to blows."
But there are some areas the "Avengers" trailer did not deliver on, according to the experts, like getting the chance to spend more time with Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, whose only previous Marvel credit is a brief cameo in "Thor."
"It would've been nice to see a little bit more Hawkeye," said Caleb Goellner, senior editor at Comics Alliance. "I understand that the 'Big Three' and Black Widow are the established characters with the biggest draw, but what can I say? I like arrows."
Ellwood agreed, adding a dearth of Black Widow to his list of critiques: "It would be fantastic if Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner actually had a chance to speak. Although, obviously, many fans of the Black Widow might not care."
Another potential area of weakness: the movie's central threat. Though we know Loki is the big bad in charge during "The Avengers," we're still in the dark as to the power he possesses. As Newsarama's Lucas Siegel pointed out: "What's the big threat? We saw Loki, who Thor took down on his own, and ... exploding cars. It would've been nice to have a little bit more direct of a 'big threat' shown."
Having said that, Siegel added: "Of course, that's what we all want to see, but it could also be a great thing to save for the movie itself."
"All in due time," Weiland agreed regarding Marvel's decision to withhold certain bits of key information. "This certainly isn't the last trailer for this movie."
It certainly isn't. Asked what they were most looking forward to seeing next from the Avengers, many of the experts agreed upon a certain shade of green.
"Hulk, Hulk, Hulk!" Weiland said. "It's a safe bet that some — if not much — of the NYC destruction seen in the trailer is caused by the Hulk and, look, we all want to see Hulk rampage. Sure, we got some of that in those two films, but I'm pretty sure in Joss Whedon's hands, he'll make those previous Hulk movies look like an episode of 'My Little Pony.' "
Another frequently cited item on the wish list: confirmation of Loki's allies, long rumored to be the Skrulls, an alien race of shape-shifters prominently featured in Marvel Comics.
"I'd like the next trailer to further tease what kind of threat the Avengers will face in 2012," Goellner said. "Skrulls? Robots? Elves? Whatever it is, I want to know the team is up against more than Loki and some city streets exploding."
"Of course everyone still wants to know who's helping Loki wreak havoc on Earth," Polowy agreed. "Clearly some sort of intergalactic posse's got his back. But I wouldn't be surprised if Whedon and company keep that under wraps for as long as they can."
But if there's one thing the experts could all agree upon? "Just the whole darn movie," Siegel exclaimed. "Can't wait!"

'Avengers' Trailer, By The Numbers
We break down the super sneak peek, from explosions to Tony Stark's quips.
By Kara Warner

Photo: Marvel
Now that the "Avengers" trailer has finally premiered, we can spend the next few hours, days and weeks overanalyzing it and trying to decipher the many messages director Joss Whedon chose to tease in that preview's action-packed one minute and 45 seconds.
After multiple, careful viewings, here's a closer look at a few interesting things that stand out, by the numbers:
12+: Explosions in the first 25 seconds. The FX team did not discriminate here, as we see cars, a few city blocks, Grand Central Station, a plane, an unidentified Avengers hangout and buildings go up in smoke.
3: Gratuitous "suiting-up" shots, wherein we see Cap/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) checking out his new uniform and then trying out his new shield; Thor (Chris Hemsworth) getting ready with a grip on his trusty hammer Mjolnir; and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) checking into his fancy Iron Man suit.
13+: Number of "looking coolly off into the distance or deeply into someone's eyes" moments. Whether lost in thought or in someone else's gaze, the trailer is packed with meaningful looks.
6: Avengers-in-action moments. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) shoots arrows! Cap runs and leaps over debris! Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) pulls off an impressive face-kick/flip maneuver! Iron Man flies during the day and at night! Thor wields his mighty hammer! Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) fires a rocket launcher!
1.5: The number of Loki leaps. The aspiring supervillain, who looks even more menacing/unseemly with the longer, scraggly black hair, executes an angry-but-impressive jump thrust at the beginning of the trailer, then a half-jump toward the end when he uses his staff to fire a powerful bolt to destroy more cars and cement.
2: The number of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents featured. "Iron Man" and "Thor" scene-stealer Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) is shown giving his new recruits a tour, watching a crisis unfold and making plans with his boss, Nick Fury, who also gets a few scenes to himself.
0: Skrull sightings. The consensus among the Internet peanut gallery is that the God of Mischief can't be causing all this destruction by his lonesome and must therefore be getting help from someone or something. All signs have so far pointed to shape-changing aliens the Skrulls, but alas, Whedon hasn't offered confirmation yet.
2.5: The number of times Tony Stark says something sassy. First, to Captain America: "No offense, I don't play well with others." Cap to Stark: "Who are you without that iron suit?" Stark's response: "A genius billionaire playboy philanthropist." To Bruce Banner/ the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo): "Dr. Banner, your work is unparalleled and I'm a huge fan of the way you lose control and turn into an enormous green rage monster."
2: The number of Avengers who get tossed out of glass windows and fall to the ground below. Captain America and Tony Stark get the honors here, both seemingly at the hand of Loki.
114: Seconds we have to wait until seeing the Hulk.

Scotty McCreery: How Does He Rank Among 'Idol' Debuts?
Country crooner's Clear As Day tops the Billboard charts, but how does he size up against other 'Idol' champs?
By James Montgomery
Scotty McCreery
Photo: Getty Images
December 14, 2003. That was the date Ruben Studdard's Soulful opened at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. And somewhat incredibly, it's also the last time a debut disc from an "American Idol" champion accomplished the feat.
Sure, there have been some near-misses along the way, but since Studdard, none have been able to bow at #1, a streak that spanned some 2,859 days (or 4,116,960 minutes, in case you were counting).
It's also a streak that officially came to an end on Wednesday (October 12), with the rather eye-opening #1 debut by "Idol" season 10 champion Scotty McCreery, whose Clear As Day sold nearly 197,000 copies to take the top spot. It's the highest first-week number for an "American Idol" winner since David Cook sold almost 280,000 copies of his self-titled debut in 2008 and, given the recent lack of chart success from "Idol" champs, it's an even more impressive feat.
Because, while some "Idol" also-rans (Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry, Adam Lambert, etc) have managed to move units, the contemporary crop of champions have suffered poor first-week sales. Thanks to the support of the country music crowd, McCreery has managed to buck that trend. But where, exactly, do Clear As Day's first-week numbers rank among the debuts by other "American Idol" winners? We've crunched the figures, along with the chart positions, below:
» Ruben Studdard, Soulful, 2003: 416, 569 (#1 debut)
» Carrie Underwood, Some Hearts, 2005: 314, 549 (#2)
» Taylor Hicks, Taylor Hicks, 2006: 298,199 (#2)
» Kelly Clarkson, Thankful, 2003: 297, 381 (#1)
» David Cook, David Cook, 2008: 279,578 (#3)
» Fantasia Barrino, Free Yourself, 2004: 239,589 (#8)
» Scotty McCreery, Clear As Day, 2011: 196,739 (#1)
» Jordin Sparks, Jordin Sparks, 2007: 119,119 (#10)
» Kris Allen, Kris Allen, 2009: 80,072 (#11)
» Lee DeWyze, Live It Up, 2010: 38,581 (#19)
