Before Wyclef Jean began his quest to conquer hunger in Haiti, he had to get past his first obstacle: Mrs. Serrato.
On this week's episode of "When I Was 17," premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV, Wyclef speaks candidly about the trials he had to overcome to shape him into the multifaceted man he is today. Graduation time had arrived and Wyclef was ready to get fitted for his gown when his high school guidance counselor told him he was wasting his time.
"So I'm going to get sized up, and they're like, 'Well, it's not necessary for you to get sized up, because there's one class you have to finish in summer school,' " he recalled. "I'm like, 'What?' "
He soon found out that he had earned an F in Algebra 2, and in order for him to walk with his classmates, his teacher had to change his grade. So Wyclef — being the out-of-the-box thinker he is — decided an apple wasn't enough to win his teach over: He had to do what he does best to persuade Mrs. Serrato to give him a better grade.
"At 17, there's a certain confidence that you have," Wyclef said. "So I was like, 'If I sing a song for this woman, she's gonna melt and I'm gonna get a D and I'mma pass the course.' "
Wyclef grabbed his guitar and waltzed into his math class with an original song. "I was like, 'I just wrote a song for you and I would just like to share it with you.' "
Did Wyclef's swoon tactic work? Find out when the former Fugees member appears on Saturday's "When I Was 17."
"When I Was 17" — this week featuring Wyclef Jean and "Awkward" star Ashley Rickards — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Adele, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Land New Guinness Records
Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Black Eyed Peas and 'Glee' also get new entries in the 'Guinness Book of World Records.'
By Gil Kaufman
Adele has been on a record-setting tear all year and now the British songbird can claim to be a "Guinness Book of World Records" champ. The upcoming 2012 edition of the book reveals that the "Rolling in the Deep" singer is in good company, as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Willow Smith and Justin Bieber also set some high-water marks over the past 12 months.
Adele can count three records, including first female to land two singles and two albums in the U.K. top five simultaneously — which only the Beatles had achieved before in 1963. Her breakthrough second CD, 21, claimed the record as the first album in U.K. chart history to sell 3 million copies in one calendar year.
She also logged the most consecutive weeks with the #1 album in the U.K. for a solo female with 11 weeks at the top — beating a record previously held by Madonna's The Immaculate Collection — and most cumulative weeks with a U.K. #1 for a solo female (18), beating out both Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain, who shared the previous record at 11 weeks.
Lady Gaga's social media predominance was rewarded, landing her the Most Followers on Twitter crown with 11,259,372 as of June 29 (she's currently at 13,469,754). In addition, "Poker Face" was honored for Most Weeks on U.S. Digital Hot Songs chart at 83 weeks. Gaga made the book last year for having the most consecutive weeks on the U.K. chart and being the most searched-for woman on the Internet.
Some other new records:
Justin Bieber: The singer's "Baby" was dubbed the Most Popular Video of Any Kind Online, thanks to 463,820,304 views as of February 16, 2011.
The Black Eyed Peas: The Biggest Selling Download in the U.K. is "I Gotta Feeling," the first-ever track to go over 1 million downloads in England.
J.K. Rowling: The "Harry Potter" author is lauded for being the First Billionaire Author thanks to sales of more than 400 million copies of the books worldwide.
"Glee": The hit show scored the Most Hit Singles in a Calendar Year with 48 making it into the U.K. top 75 in 2011, breaking their previous record of 45 hits in 2010.
Rihanna: First Female to have U.K. #1 singles in five consecutive years (2007-2011), from "Rude Boy" to her most recent, "Only Girl (In the World)." Only Elvis and the Beatles have had more U.K. #1 singles in consecutive years.
Willow Smith: The Youngest Transatlantic Top 20 Artist, thanks to "Whip My Hair" hitting the top 20 when she was only 10 years old.
Lil Wayne: Most U.S. Hot 100 Hits by a Rap Artist with 64 between 1999 and 2010.
U2: Highest Grossing Music Tour for the 360 outing, which by April 2011 had raked in more than $539 million for 110 shows between July 2009 and July 2011.

Nirvana Heiress Frances Bean Cobain: About A Girl
Daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love turns 19 a month before Nevermind's 20th anniversary.

From the moment of her birth, she was instantly the most famous baby on the planet. Frances Bean Cobain, now 19, is the only child of late Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain and Hole frontwoman Courtney Love.
As we were digging through the tape archives this week in the midst of the 20th-anniversary celebration of Nirvana's landmark Nevermind album, we unearthed some footage of the rock offspring spending quality time with her parents and thought it was worth catching you up on what Frances has been up to lately.
Born August 18, 1992, Frances — whose godfather is former R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe and godmother is actress Drew Barrymore — had a childhood that was unusual even by Hollywood standards. While Love tried her best to keep the young Frances out of the spotlight, the toddler would occasionally make the papers on Love's arm at a movie premiere or public event.
Photos: Growing Up Frances Bean Cobain
As she grew older, Frances continued to mostly shun the spotlight, giving only a handful of interviews to date, including her first one in 2005 as a 13-year-old to Teen Vogue.
Here are five facts you may not know about Frances Bean:
» She worked as an intern at Rolling Stone during the summer of 2008. The gig was ironic, if only because her dad famously wore a homemade T-shirt that read "corporate magazines still suck" during Nirvana's first cover shoot for the famed rock mag.
» Her sweet 16 birthday party was held in August 2008 at the Los Angeles House of Blues and featured a performance from Mindless Self Indulgence.
» Like her father, Frances is also an artist. She debuted a collection called "Scumf---" at Los Angeles' La Luz de Jesus gallery in July 2010 under the pseudonym "Fiddle Tim." The show mostly consisted of cartoony drawings of distorted figures with titles such as "Hips Like Battleships," "Chopsy Cheech" and "Spector Hector."
» Frances was part of a large group of background singers on a strange project from transgressive Dresden Dolls singer Amanda Palmer called "Evelyn Evelyn," which was reportedly created by a pair of conjoined sisters from Seattle. The song "My Space" features backing vocals from Cobain, comedians Margaret Cho and Eugene Mirman, Andrew W.K., My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way and "Weird" Al Yankovic.
» The biggest splash to date, however, has been a series of moody, alluring black-and-white photos of Frances shot by fashion designer Hedi Slimane.
Who knows what's next for Frances, but given her musical and artistic pedigree, it's likely we've not seen the last of her.
Stick with MTV News as we reveal the Nevermind You Never Knew, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's definitive album with classic footage, new interviews and much more.

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.
To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.
According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.
Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).
The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.
It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.
Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

Stranger Danger
My sister recently had a talk with my four-year-old nephew Jack about strangers. Here's how it went:
SISTER: Now, Jack, if a stranger says, "Come here, I want to show you something," what do you do?
JACK: I turn around and run!
SISTER: If a stranger says, "Come here, I want to give you some candy," what do you do?
JACK: I turn around and run!
SISTER: If a stranger says, "Come here, I want to show you my puppy," what do you do?
JACK: Oh, I love puppies...
